LIFEVAC

The LifeVac is a non-invasive, non-powered, single-use device that can help clear objects from a choking person's airway. It's designed to be used by anyone, including those without medical training, in situations where traditional methods like the Heimlich maneuver are unsuccessful.

The LifeVac is similar to a small toilet plunger and has bellows that attach to a clear face mask that's placed over the choking person's nose and mouth. To use it, the person pushes the bellows' handles down, then quickly up, forcing air out of the sides of the device and creating a vacuum. When the lever is pulled back, the vacuum will suck the object out of the airway. The LifeVac also has a patented valve that prevents air from exiting the mask, creating a one-way suction.

The LifeVac is intended for use on people who are disabled, pregnant, large in stature, living alone, or have children too young to save them. It comes with both adult and pediatric masks, but shouldn't be used on premature infants under 8 pounds or people who are hypersensitive to plastic.

Some say the LifeVac is highly recommended and has saved their child's life. However, current medical guidelines recommend back blows, abdominal thrusts, and CPR as the go-to interventions for someone who's choking.

First Aid Boston provides training on the proper use of LifeVac during a choking emergency. Check the training page for additional information.
